Kasanka National Park -Zambia.

Kasanka, which translates to “harvesting place” or “place where animals gather” in the Bemba language, is home to Kasanka National Park, one of Zambia’s smallest national parks that features an incredible array of biodiversity. A particularly remarkable wildlife event is the Kasanka Bat Migration. The park is inhabited by common duikers, bushbucks, warthogs, vervet monkeys, and Kinda baboons, which are closely related to the yellow baboon. Hippos are often seen in the rivers and lakes of Kasanka, including Lake Wasa, located directly opposite the main lodge.

To reach Kasanka National Park, take the Great North Road from Lusaka, turn right just after Kapiri Mposhi, and then make a left after Serenje on the way to Samfya. At the 54 km / 34 mi mark, turn left into the park at the Malaushi Gate.

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is located at the end of the Great Rift Valley, close to Zambia’s eastern border with Malawi. The Luangwa River runs through the park, forming various oxbow lagoons and alluvial floodplains that attract a significant amount of wildlife. It is famous for its abundant biodiversity. At the Mfuwe Gate entrance, the river is often populated with hippos. The woodland savannah is home to hundreds of bird species. Trails from the park’s lodges wind past baobab trees, herds of elephants, and the rare Thornicroft’s giraffes. Spotlights are used to locate the leopard population after dark. In terms of scenery, diversity, and animal density, there is truly no other park that rivals South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s top safari destinations. As for the seasons in South Luangwa, the best time for wildlife viewing in South Luangwa National Park is during the dry season, which lasts from July to October.

Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is the largest and oldest national park in Zambia, covering an impressive area of 22,400 km². It stands as one of Africa’s most remote and pristine wilderness areas, featuring a stunning array of habitats, including the Busanga Plains in the north, vast broad-leafed miombo woodlands, and the Kafue River that winds through the park. Established in 1950, Kafue is recognized as Zambia’s oldest national park and is the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in the world, spanning 22,400 square kilometers (8,650 square miles) of breathtaking African wilderness.

The best time to visit Kafue National Park is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. In contrast, the rainy season from November to April renders the park inaccessible due to heavy rainfall. Nevertheless, some camps operate year-round, and this ‘green’ season provides particularly lush landscapes. Kafue is home to more than 150 mammal species, including 21 antelope species, making it the highest diversity in Africa, thus creating a paradise for wildlife lovers. It is one of the top spots to see African wild dogs, leopards, cheetahs, and lions, especially in the northern and central areas.

Kafue is perfect for self-drive adventures and offers a range of contrasting landscapes; it includes many diverse biomes within a single park. To fully experience what Kafue has to offer, visitors should explore the northern, central, and southern parts of the park. Kafue National Park is accessible by both air and road.

Luiwa Plains — National Park

Liuwa Plain National Park covers an impressive area of 3,369 square kilometres in the Western Province of Zambia. The name “Liuwa” means “plain” in the local Lozi language. Historically, these plains served as a hunting ground for Lubosi Lewanika, the Litunga of the Lozi people. Located in Zambia’s Western Province, Liuwa Plain National Park is a remarkable site for exploration. The park spans 3,660 square kilometres. While the migration of wildebeest is the main draw for visitors to Liuwa Plain National Park, its incredible biodiversity guarantees that they will return. Around 40,000 migrating wildebeest are joined by herds of zebra, tsessebe, and lechwe, along with predators like wild dogs, hyenas, cheetahs, and lions. During the dry season, from June to October, the herds disperse into the woodlands, leading to fewer opportunities for wildlife viewing. Access to Liuwa Plain is generally through private charter flights from Lusaka or Livingstone. Although the Kafue area is nearer to Liuwa Plain, the seasonal patterns of the two regions do not coincide. Wildlife viewing at Liuwa Plain National Park is highly seasonal, contrasting with most other parks and reserves in Zambia. Animals migrate to the plains during the Wet season, which extends from November to April and into May. The best time to visit is shortly after the first rains in November.
